How to Brew Better Coffee at Home: Methods, Ratios, and Tips

A Better Home Coffee Routine

Great home coffee does not require expensive equipment. Consistency matters most: use fresh beans, clean water, an accurate ratio, and a repeatable method.

Start with Fresh Coffee

Whole beans should be ground shortly before brewing. A burr grinder produces more even particles than a blade grinder. Choose a grind that matches the method: coarse for French press, medium for drip, and finer for espresso.

Measure Coffee and Water

A useful starting point is 60 grams of coffee per liter of water. You can adjust this ratio according to taste. A kitchen scale makes results easier to repeat, while filtered water often improves clarity and balance.

Popular Brewing Methods

Pour-over brewing highlights aroma and delicate flavors. French press produces a fuller body because the coffee remains in contact with water for several minutes. An AeroPress is flexible and portable. Drip machines are convenient and can produce excellent results when the showerhead distributes water evenly.

Control the Brew

Water temperature, grind size, contact time, and agitation all affect extraction. If coffee tastes sour and thin, use a finer grind or longer contact time. If it tastes harsh and bitter, try a coarser grind or shorter brew. Change one variable at a time.

Keep Equipment Clean

Old coffee oils quickly become rancid. Rinse brewing equipment after every use and descale machines regularly. A clean setup lets the character of the beans come through.
